Winning Within

Ouch! That’s how it feels when an uncomfortable truth washes over you and denial is no longer an adequate flotation device. Could it be the promotion that passed us by, the marriage that failed, the friendship that suffered, and the ambitious goals that collected dust on the shelf were our handiwork? The comfort of blaming an outside source is of no comfort when that source is self. The good news is we can win from within. The first step toward this personal victory is always the hardest part. Using myself as an example, I’m thoroughly successful at self-hazing when I’m not pleased with my professionalRead More →

You’re Doing Too Much

So you’re the master of multitasking, huh? It impresses your boss and wows your friends and family. Like that 1980s Enjoli commercial, you can bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan. You can wipe runny noses, clean up messes, put out fires and even spark a few. Armed with a mobile device and a go-get-it attitude, you could rule the world (or at least the carpool lane). There’s just one slight hiccup. When you major in multitasking, you often minor in joy and fulfillment. “You are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.” (LukeRead More →

You Can Fix It

Maybe it was the pout on my face that convinced a mentor administering a fresh dose of advice to issue a friendly reminder from across the dinner table. “We’re all broken,” she said gently after listening to my grievance.  “It’s a matter of deciding how much and what type of brokenness you can live with.” I agree with that. There are broken relationships, broken bank accounts, broken hearts, broken paths to success, and broken spirits. We’re all humanly flawed and imperfect in some ways. As I prepared to write this blog entry, the prodigal son (or daughter) kept coming to my mind. I see himRead More →

Whose Team Are You On?

If you’ve ever seen the Wizard of Oz, surely you recall the scene when Dorothy encounters Glinda, the Good Witch of the North in downtown Munchkin Land. She asks Dorothy, “What the Munchkins want to know is: are you a good witch or a bad witch?” Shocked by the accusation that she was anything less than angelic, Dorothy declares, “But, I’ve already told you, I’m not a witch at all! Witches are old and ugly.” Like Dorothy, most of us are convinced where we stand on the good to bad spectrum. If you profess to be a believer, you might even think you’re off-the-scale goodRead More →

Heart Rest

Doctors tell us at least 30-minutes of exercise a day can keep cardiovascular disease away. Dieticians urge us to eat plenty of salmon, walnuts and berries to ward off heart disease as well. The prescription for treating the greatest muscle in our body seems simple with the onus on us to do our part. But what about the remedy for a heart that has weathered many storms? A good friend often says, “I’ve got a grown woman’s heart. It’s been duct-taped, super-glued, rubber-banded, paper-clipped and stapled.” Her wit and candor about relationship trials always solicit some good laughter. In all seriousness, what she means is:Read More →

This Way

Where am I going? How will I get there? Will I make it? Who will come with me? Will I travel alone? Whether you consider it a midlife crisis or careful contemplation at any age, there comes a time in everyone’s life when we wrestle with direction. Which way do we go? The wisdom of Solomon urges, “Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.” (Proverbs 4:26-27 NIV) Why isn’t the path just laid out before us with neon billboards and bright laneRead More →
